Pronunciation: shower /∫/

/s/, /z/ y sh /ʃ/ are three difficult sounds for Spanish students. In this chapter, we are going to emphasize the difference among them. Remember /ʃ/ is the sound you make when you want someone to hush, for example, in a library: shhhhhhh!

La /s/, /z/ y /ʃ/ son tres sonidos distintos que los estudiantes de inglés tienen dificultades para diferenciar. En esta entrega vamos a ver cómo marcar bien la diferencia entre los tres sonidos.

La sh es el sonido que hacemos cuando mandamos callar, por ejemplo, en una biblioteca: “¡shhhhhhh!”

Now, listen to these words that include /z/, /s/ or/∫/ to see how important a correct pronunciation is.

Ahora, escucha estas palabras con los sonidos /z/, /s/ o/∫/ para ver lo importante que es poder distinguirlas fonéticamente.

Now pay attention to the English words that start with the letter s+consonant. Spanish students pronounce e-s in words such as Spain /espein/or start /estart/. The secret is exaggerating and making the -s longer, as in SSSSSpain or ssstart or connect all the words in the sentence, as in He. . . espeaks. . . espanish. . . –> Hespeakspanish.

Finalmente, presta atención a las palabras que empiezan por la letra s+consonante. Los españoles pronuncian una e antes de palabras como Spain (Espain), o start (estart). El truco está en exagerar y alargar la s en palabras de este tipo para asegurarte de que no estás añadiendo una vocal antes. Por ejemplo, decir SSSSSSSSSpain, ssssssssstart. Otro truco muy bueno es conectar las palabras de tu frase para no dejar un hueco donde la e se puede colar. Por ejemplo, en lugar de He. . . espeaks. . . espanish. . . dices –> Hespeakspanish.
